Mane given straight red after booting Ederson in face

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes was left prostrate on the Etihad Stadium turf in Saturday’s meeting with Liverpool after receiving a boot to the face from Sadio Mane after 37 minutes.

The Senegalese forward only had his eyes on Joel Matip‘s long ball, but was immediately given his marching orders by referee Jonathan Moss for a high foot.

Ederson was subsequently stretchered off the pitch and replaced by Claudio Bravo between the sticks.

The 24-year-old Ederson was signed from Benfica for around £34.9 million in the summer, and early diagnosis on the injury was that he suffered cheek and jaw injuries. The Independent’s Miguel Delaney reported that Ederson wasn’t going to hospital, and was instead going for further medical examination at City’s nearby Etihad Campus.

City soon made full use of its numerical advantage when Kevin De Bruyne claimed his second assist of the match with a cross that found an unmarked Gabriel Jesus in first-half injury time.
